| Question |
How do you explain Surah 2 Verses 190-193 to yourselves and people around you? Only Allah knows under what circumstances those verses were revealed. I am sure they were revealed for good reasons . It's just quite disturbing to read that verse to myself or to the people who wants learn about the Holy Quran. May be I am interpreting it wrong. Can you please tell me the meaning of those 3 verses?
Thank You and may Allah's peace and blessings be up on you. |

Dear Sister Maryam Fatima,
Thank you for your question.
There is nothing in Surah al-Baqara Verses 190 - 193 that need worry us if we make the right distinction between those Qur'anic norms which justify the opening of hostilities (called jus ad beltum in Roman law) from those which regulate the conduct of hostilities (called jus in bello in Roman law). In fact, the three verses are fully compatible with the official doctrine of NATO!
What it boils down to is this: Muslims (like NATO) are only allowed to use force in response to aggression i.e. defensively, and as long as it lasts. However, once Muslims find themselves in a situation of defence they (like NATO) can engage the enemy whenever and wherever they run into him. Now re-read 2: 190-193 with this distinction in mind, and everything will fall into place.
