Muslims believe that God ordered Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) to call people to perform hajj (pilgrimage). Many years later, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) told his Companions that pilgrimage to Makkah once in lifetime is one of the principal duties for devoted believers.

Pilgrimage is one of the oldest rituals in all divine religions. Also, its practice could be found in some earthly beliefs. But the question is: why is pilgrimage a significant act of worship for believers?
