It is well known to Muslims, Christians, and Jews that God ordered Abraham to sacrifice his own son after several years of waiting and wishing to be a father.

But why would God, the Benevolent, the Merciful, ask Abraham to do so?

And why should Muslims be required to mark this event and commemorate this incident every year?
